Clairette de Die originates from the Rhône Valley, more precisely from the Drôme Valley and the Diois region in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, south of the city of Valence. It is the Diois region which is the origin of the term "Clairette de Die." Clairette is the name of one of the grape varieties used to produce Clairette de Die. It is a white sparkling wine produced with Muscat blanc à petits grains and Clairette grape varieties. Clairette de Die is composed of at least 75% Muscat blanc. The integration of Clairette blanche reduces the sweet taste of the wine and makes it finer on the palate. Clairette de Die is therefore a sparkling wine whose grape varieties grow in a temperate climate with mountainous relief at 700 metres altitude. The assets of the fresh mountain climate are found in the vinification of the beverage at very cool temperatures. The roots of Clairette de Die date back to antiquity. This vineyard once produced a wine whose fermentation was stopped until winter by plunging containers into the cold water of a river called "aigleucos." Archaeologists have found traces of a wine-growing villa dating from the 1st century in the vineyard that produces Clairette de Die today.

Clairette de Die has an ancestral history whose more recent evolution is marked by a manuscript preserved at the Die museum. This manuscript dates from 1700 and specifies that local winemakers made their wines sparkle. This mention demonstrates that some local wines were sparkling wines like Clairette de Die as we know it today. To make their wine sparkle, winemakers at the time used a so-called "rural" or "ancient" method which consisted of multiple lees transfers before winter. This process is no longer used today owing to its long implementation time, which proves costly for wine producers.
